서유럽 홍수와 북미 폭염

유럽쪽 폭염 메커니즘을 공부하다가 찾은 논문 Amplified Rossby waves enhance risk of concurrent heatwaves in major breadbasket regions.

초록에 의하면, 지구를 서→동으로 순환하는 파동인 Rossby wave가 북반구 상에서 동시적인 폭염과 홍수를 야기할 수 있다고 한다. 2018년에 거의 동시적으로 발생한 극심한 폭염과 폭우가 그 예이다. (2018년은 우리나라에도 기록적인 폭염이 닥친 해인데 당시에 폭우는 어느 지역에서 발생했는지 잘 모르겠다.)

Abstract

In an interconnected world, simultaneous extreme weather events in distant regions could potentially impose high-end risks for societies1,2. In the mid-latitudes, circumglobal Rossby waves are associated with a strongly meandering jet stream and might cause simultaneous heatwaves and floods across the northern hemisphere. For example, in the summer of 2018, several heat and rainfall extremes occurred near-simultaneously.

Here we show that Rossby waves with wavenumber 5 and 7 have a preferred phase position and constitute recurrent atmospheric circulation patterns in summer. Those patterns can induce simultaneous heat extremes in specific regions: Central North America, Eastern Europe and Eastern Asia for wave 5, and Western Central North America, Western Europe and Western Asia for wave 7.

다양한 Wavenumber별 특징에 대해서는 논문을 읽고 조금 더 공부를 해야겠지만, 몇 주 전 북미에 닥친 폭염과 근래 서유럽 홍수도 큰 연관이 있을 것 같다.

기후변화로 앞으로 이런 extreme events가 더 빈번해질텐데 ㅠㅠ 동시 발생적 기상 이변들을 잘 예측할 수 있으면 좋겠다.
