한 달 여만에 알렉슬린과의 수업 (과감하게 1시간 동안 대화)

 

 

Grammar Error: 

 

1) adopt →  adapt 

적응을 표현한다는 것이 adopt로 발음을 해버렸다 (아차!!). 

adjust to 도 같은 의미를 가지는데 둘은 어떤 뉘앙스의 차이가 있을까?

We need to adapt to new normal post covid era.
I've been trying to adapt to my school life.
It took me a while to adjust to learning programming language.

 

2) getting better → managing my classes better 

                           → doing better = general 

학교생활이나 수업 듣는 것들이 점점 더 나아진다는 의미에서 getting better라는 표현을 썼는데 의미를 명확히 하기 위해서는 managing my classes better로 쓰는 것이 좋다! 또는 일반적으로는 doing better라고 하면 무난! 그렇지 않으면 내가 점점 더 똑똑해져서 수업이 쉬워지는 의미로 받아들여 질 것 같다.

I'm doing better in school.
I'm managing my classes better.

 

3) Nowadays I’m researching the before that period → I’m researching the period before that (Industrial Revolution period) 

동일한 의미이지만 좀더 간결하게 표현하기 위해서는 the period before that 으로 수식해주는 것이 낫다.

아직은 문장 구조를 작문으로 세우는 것보다 구술을 통해 만드는 과정에서 부족함이 많다고 느낀다. 

 

4) pre-industrial season → pre-industrial period… era

어떤 '시기'를 표현하려고 season을 썼는데 season은 사계절이나 어떤 한 철, 가령 프로야구 시즌과 같은 기간을 말할 때에 적합한 단어다. 그 외에 특정 기간과 시기를 의미하려면 period와 era가 알맞다.

 

 

5) our lifetime  → our lives, our lives since we’ve seen each other

그간의 근황을 나눈 이야기를 하고 싶었는데 일생/생애를 나타내는 lifetime을 사용했다. 이건 은퇴 할 나이쯤 되면 적절한 단어가 될테지만 지금 원하는 표현은 our lives! 더더욱 우리가 만난 이후의 시간들에 대한 근황이라면 since we've seen each other라고 덧붙이기.

I met my elementary school friends in a decade, and we shared our lifes since we've seen each other.

 

6) We went biking at a park. 

자전거를 탄다고 할 때 go biking 보다는 한국식으로 자전거 riding이란 표현이 굳어진 것 같다. 그리고 장소는 그냥 편하게 공원이라고 생각해도 될텐데 자전거 길을 따라 곳곳으로 다닌 상황을 그대로 표현하고자 노력하게 된다.

We went biking along a cycle path.

 

7) someday a person working at the company asked me → one day

'과거의 언제'를 말할 때 습관적으로 'someday'가 튀어나온다. (어릴 때 김동희-썸데이를 즐겨 들었기 때문..ㅠ_ㅠ)

과거의 어떤 특정한 날을 표현할 때는 'one day'가 더 적합. 근데 경우에 따라서는 미래의 시기도 one day를 쓰는 것 같은데 일반적으로 미래를 표현할 땐 someday를 사용하면 문제가 없으려나. 

One day he asked me to join a program.
I'll visit there someday.

 

이 외에는 grammar error 보다는 표현 정리

1) I wanted to experience STS more…. I wanted more (practical) experience in STS. 

2) I am trying to choose between changing/leaving my current 000 and going to/moving to another 000. 

 

 

 

New expressions : 

 

1) whirlwind = a tornado is a whirlwind 

토네이도처럼 일이 정신없이 이어질 때 적합한 어휘. 쓸 일이 많지 않았으면 한다만....

격렬한 논쟁/감정의 동요 a whirlwind of discussions/emotion, a whirlwind romace/trip 등등

I was in the middle of a whirlwind
I take back peace after a whirlwind.
(속담) sow the wind and reap the whirlwind -> 되로 주고 말로 받기

 

2) risk-averse = I don’t like to take risks.

keeps it safe → plays it safe (exp) 

I like to play it safe.
I couln't keep up with my work/school

 

3) mantra = a saying that you hold dear, that you use to keep yourself positive, motivated.

좌우명. 가령 live and let die = live your life to the fullest = yolo 같은 것들.

hold dear는 ~을 소중히 여기다

"YOLO" was a popular mantar among young people.
"Follow your heart" is becoming a popular mantra these days. 
I wanna protect everthing I hold dear.

 

4) 양적/질적 방법론

qualitative methods ← quality = non-numerical method 

quantitative methods = mathematical 

아는 단어인데, 들었을 때 한 번에 인식되지 못했다.

 

5) How do you like ___? = do you like __ + what do you like about ___?

6) How come?  = Why?

7) How do you mean?
