분사구문

Having long sought to understand the emergence of expertise, artistic and otherwise, many researchers argued that exceptional achievement may simply come down to hard work.

 

- artistic과 otherwise는 품사가 형용사, 부사로 expertise를 부연 설명함. 명사구였다면 구조적으로나 의미상으로도 expertise와 동격이었겠지만 이들은 삽입구로 해석해야 함에 주의.

- come down to : 결국 ~이 되다, ~에 이르다, (한마디로) 요약/설명되다의 의미인데 쉽게 안 써질 것 같음.

- merge : 이동하다 옮기다 emerge : 부상하다 떠오르다

 

The early volunteers devoted themselves to hours of unpaid work for the poor and helpless, never minding that few appreciated what they were doing for society.

 

- devote ~ dedicate ~ commit : 헌신하다 (* commit crime : 범행을 저지르다)

- helpless : 무력한, 속수무책인, 감당못하는 helplessly : 속절없이, 의지할데 없이, 어찌해볼 수 없이

- few는 부정어로 해석해야 함. 봉사자들이 사회를 위해 행하는 것을 알아주는 사람이 거의 없던 상황.

 

Sentenced to a long prison term, Gandhi was only set free when he fell ill with a serious medical condition.

 

- sentence : 선고하다

- set free : 해방/석방하다, ~을 자유의 몸이 되게 하다

- only도 마찬가지로 부정어로 해석. 매우 아프고 나서야 석방 된 간디.

 

 

비교급 (최상급)

Except for nuclear war or a collision with an asteroid, no force has more potential to damage our planet's web of life than global warming.

 

- no A has more ... than B : B만큼 ... 하는 A가 없다 정도로 보면 됨.

- 고로 핵전쟁이나 소행성 충돌과 같은 경우를 제외하고는 지구온난화만큼 우리 생태계를 위협할 수 있는 것이 없다.

- 이 문장 통째로 너무나 활용하고 싶음!!!!!!
